Polluted Runoff Threatens Livelihoods Around Lake Dianchi
Surface runoff and pollutants from rivers near Lake Dianchi are mainly influenced by agriculture and phosphate mining. Three rivers were monitored during rainfall events, showing high levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, organic matter, and suspended solids. These pollutants greatly exceed safe levels, with N and P being the main contributors to pollution. Phosphate mining significantly increases suspended solids during rainfall, leading to higher pollution levels compared to rivers affected only by agriculture.
