New foundation design reduces uneven settlement under heavy tank loads.
The researchers used a computer program to analyze how well a special foundation made of gravel piles can support a heavy tank. They found that by adjusting the stiffness of the cushion under the tank, they could reduce uneven settling of the foundation. Increasing the cushion stiffness made the piles and soil around them settle more evenly. The top of the pile settled less than the soil around it, while the bottom settled more. This information helps engineers design better foundations for tanks.
