Artificial vegetation types impact soil moisture and carbon levels dramatically.
Reforestation with different types of artificial vegetation affects soil properties in the Loess Plateau. Locust tree forests use a lot of water, while Chinese pine forests have higher soil moisture. Chinese pine forests also increase soil organic carbon, but orchards decrease it. Sea-buckthorn, oriental arbor-vitae, and locust tree have lower soil organic carbon than grasslands. Rainfall helps recharge soil water in forest lands during the rainy season.
