The LIU family of Hongdong in Shanxi during the Ming and Qing Dynasty developed into a prominent clan through success in imperial exams, a mix of farming and trade, government support, and intermarriage with other influential families. Despite changes in the two dynasties, the clan's growth and economic structure continued, maintaining its political power in northern China.
