They found that the monsoon's northern boundary has shifted over time, impacting droughts and floods in Northern China. By analyzing data, they created a monsoon intensity index to better understand this relationship. They discovered that the monsoon's intensity influences precipitation in July and August on both long-term and short-term scales.
