Climate Change Threatens Water Efficiency of Acacia Forests, Study Finds
The researchers studied how the water use efficiency of Acacia mangium forests is affected by climate. They measured carbon isotope ratios in leaves to calculate canopy water use efficiency. They found that water use efficiency was highest in winter and lowest in summer, with a strong correlation to air temperature and water vapor pressure. The stable isotope composition of newly-fixed carbon was a useful tool for studying environmental stress on canopy water use efficiency.
