China's Heavy Industry Boom Fuels Unsustainable Energy Consumption
The increase in Chinese industrial energy consumption from 1997 to 2002 was mainly due to the growth of high energy-consuming heavy chemical industries. This was driven by the expansion of input and output scales in these industries. However, the overall energy consumption increase was limited by a decrease in energy intensity in industrial sectors. The adjustment of industry also played a role in this change. The study suggests that heavy chemical industries should not be the main focus of Chinese industrial development.
