Red tide threat looms in Dalian Bay as phytoplankton population surges.
A study in Dalian Bay in 1999 found 53 species of phytoplankton, with Bacillariophyta and Pyrrophyta being the most common types. The average quantity of phytoplankton was 23.4×104 cells/m3, with Bacillariophyta making up 80.1% and Pyrrophyta 16.7%. The main species causing red tides were Leptocylindyus danicus, Skeletonema costatum, and Thalassiosira nordenskioldi.
