Floating plant beds remove 90% of nitrogen from polluted water
Floating beds planted with common reed and calamus were tested to clean polluted water. The plants removed a high percentage of nitrogen from the water, with reeds being more efficient than calamus. Plant roots played a key role in the nitrogen removal process. The longer and denser the roots, the better the water purification. This study shows that using plants in floating beds can effectively clean nitrogen from polluted water.
