Toxic Pb and NaCl stress damages cucumber seedlings, impacting crop yields.
Cucumber seedlings were studied to see how they react to lead (Pb), salt (NaCl), and a combination of both stresses. The researchers grew the seedlings in soil with different levels of Pb and NaCl. They found that as the Pb and NaCl levels increased, the cucumber leaves had less chlorophyll. The seedlings also had higher conductivity and MDA content. However, the sugar and proline content, as well as the activities of SOD and POD, increased. NaCl was more harmful to the seedlings than Pb, and the combined stress was worse than either stress alone.
