Yangtze River Faces Alarming Pollution Crisis, Urgent Action Needed
Water quality in the Nanjing reach of the Yangtze River has been declining from 2005 to 2009, with most water zones not meeting standards. Main pollution sources are rivers and industrial sewage, contributing to high levels of COD and NH3-N. The permissible pollution levels for these pollutants are set, and reductions are needed in various water use areas. Drinking water sources require the most significant pollutant reduction, with COD and NH3-N levels needing to be decreased by up to 99% and 97.4%, respectively.
