Intercropping barley and maize together can increase yield and nutrient uptake, especially when using plastic sheet mulching. Without mulching, there is no yield advantage, but with mulching, there is a significant increase in yield and nutrient uptake. Above-ground interactions play a bigger role in increasing yield, while below-ground interactions are more important for nutrient uptake.
