Decline of Aquatic Plants Threatens Ecosystem in Wuhan Lakes.
The researchers investigated aquatic plants in the lakes of Beihu Watershed in Wuhan in 2009. They found that the total area covered by aquatic plants was 3.89 km², with a total biomass of 17834.28t. There were 49 species of aquatic plants, with Vallisneria spiralis, Myriophyllum spicatum, and Nelumbo nucifera being the dominant species. Submerged plants were the most common, followed by emergent and floating-leaved plants. The distribution of aquatic plants was concentrated in Lake Yandong and Lake Yanxi, with Lake Yandong having a simpler plant community structure and Lake Yanxi having a more diverse composition. However, due to human activities and water quality deterioration, the distribution of aquatic plants in the lakes showed a declining trend, leading to degradation of the plant communities.
