The study looked at soil in high-yield maize fields in Northeast China. They found that these fields had more organic carbon compared to regular fields. The quality of the organic matter in the soil was also better in the high-yield fields. This means that the way the crops were grown not only increased the amount of organic carbon in the soil but also improved its quality.
