Chilling acclimation boosts cucumber seedlings' resilience to cold-induced light damage.
Cucumber seedlings were studied to see how they handle bright light and cold temperatures. When exposed to low temperatures and high light, seedlings that were used to the cold showed more damage at first, but recovered faster. At 4℃, both the ability to use light for photosynthesis and the ability to protect against damage were reduced. However, after being acclimated to 12℃ for 2 days, the seedlings were better at protecting themselves from damage caused by light at 4℃. This suggests that getting used to the cold helps seedlings deal with bright light better.
