Melatonin boosts cucumber seedlings' resilience to high temperature stress, enhancing photosynthesis.
Exogenous melatonin was sprayed on cucumber seedlings to see how it affects photosynthesis under high temperature stress. The net photosynthetic rate decreased, but stomatal conductance, CO2 concentration, and transpiration rate increased at high temperature. Adding melatonin initially increased photosynthesis, but then it decreased. The decrease in photosynthesis was mainly due to factors other than stomata. Chlorophyll fluorescence analysis showed that melatonin increased chlorophyll content and improved photosynthetic efficiency in cucumber seedlings under heat stress.
