New approach slab design optimizes mechanics of roadbed-bridge transition for safer tracks.
The study looked at different ways to design approach slabs at roadbed-bridge transition sections of slab tracks. By analyzing the mechanics of slab tracks with different approach slab structures, the researchers found that placing the approach slab on the abutment, aligning its ends with the slab edge, and using continuous bed plate and rigid foam panel above the end-near-abutment is the best scheme. They also discovered that the length of the approach slab without support greatly affects the mechanics of the slab track and the approach slab itself. This information can help improve the design of roadbed-bridge transition sections of slab tracks.
