Mountain soil in west Yunnan stores carbon at higher levels.
The researchers studied how much carbon is stored in the soil in a region in China called Dali Autonomous Prefecture. They looked at 158 soil samples to figure out the average amount of carbon in the soil. They found that the soil in this region has more carbon than the national average. The amount of carbon varied depending on the type of soil, with some areas having more carbon than others. Overall, the northwest part of the region had more carbon in the soil compared to the southeast.
