The researchers used satellite images and special technology to study how grasslands in Northern Shaannxi changed over time. They found that the grasslands got worse between 1989 and 2000, but the decline slowed down from 2000 to 2006. By using a special model, they predicted that the grasslands will continue to shrink, losing a large area by 2030.
