China's ecological footprint exceeded its capacity since 1980, threatening local sustainability but maintaining global sustainability.
The study looked at China's ecological footprint from 1949 to 2008. Before the late 1970s, China used less resources than it could sustain. But from the 1980s onwards, China used more resources than it could sustain. This means China was doing okay globally and locally until the late 1970s, but after that, it was using too many resources locally.
