Saline water irrigation transforms saline soil into fertile farmland in Xinjiang.
Saline water irrigation can help improve agriculture in Xinjiang by reducing soil salinity. A long-term study in Fukang showed that irrigating with 2-5 g/L saline water at 1m depth desalinized the soil. After 15 years, soil salinity decreased, with anion/cation levels at 37 meq/kg and 0.248% salinity. HCO3- and K+/Na+ levels were higher but did not harm crops. This means it's possible to irrigate saline soil with saline water in Xinjiang without drainage.
