The scientists developed a method to map soil types over a large area by studying the different layers of soil. They used GPS to find specific points, analyzed the thickness of soil layers using GIS, and created a detailed soil map. When they tested the method on a 28.3 hectare area with shale-based soil, they found it was accurate 94% of the time.
