A study analyzed land use changes in Jinzhong City from 1996 to 2004. The findings show that cultivated land, grassland, other agricultural land, and water conservancy land decreased, while forest land, horticultural land, settlement and mining land, transportation land, and unused land increased. Grassland had the most significant area change. The ranking of land use change degree from highest to lowest is grassland, transportation land, unused land, other agricultural land, forest land, settlement and mining land, cultivated land, horticultural land, water conservancy land, and other land. Different types of land use had varying spatial variety of relative land use change degree, with grassland showing the most spatial variety and cultivated land the least.
