Unprecedented weakening of Atlantic circulation threatens global climate stability.
The Atlantic Ocean has a major circulation system called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This system moves warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, where it cools, sinks, and returns southwards at depth. A recent study suggests that the weakening of this circulation in the late 1970s is unlike anything seen in the past thousand years.
