Desertification worsens in Jinghe watershed, human factors hindering reversal efforts.
The study used satellite data to track desertification in Jinghe watershed from 1990 to 2011. They found that the total area affected by desertification decreased by 3.54 × 104 hectares during this time. However, while moderate desertification decreased slightly each year, highly severe desertification, severe desertification, and mild desertification increased annually. The most significant growth was seen in highly severe desertification. Despite efforts to combat desertification, factors like population pressure and inefficient water use slowed down progress. These human factors need to be addressed to effectively prevent and control desertification in the future.
