Researchers conducted artificial rainfall experiments on mountain slopes in northern China to study how soil water content and potential change during rainfall. They found that soil water content changes with rainfall intensity and time, and that there are five stages in this process. Sandy soil retains more water at lower suction levels and less water at higher suction levels.
