Turning Crop Waste into Biofuel: Breakthrough Boosts Ethanol Production
This study aimed to figure out how to turn straw into useful stuff like ethanol by efficiently breaking down its cellulose and hemicellulose components. They found that by using specific conditions, they could separate the cellulose and hemicellulose from the straw. They discovered that after using a 2.5mol·L-1 solution and boiling it for 14 hours, they had pure cellulose with a purity of 93.73% and hemicellulose with a 76.96% yield. Furthermore, they realized that by treating the pure cellulose with 22% sulfuric acid at 121℃ for 40 minutes, they could convert it into fermentable sugars with a very high hydrolyzing ratio of 98.85%.
