Tuna Overfishing Threatens Ecosystem Balance in Pacific Ocean.
The researchers analyzed catches from purse seine fishing in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean in 2004. They found 19 species, with skipjack tuna being the most common, followed by yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna. Skipjack tuna were mostly 27-81cm long, with the most common length being 40-50cm. Yellowfin tuna ranged from 32-165cm, with two common lengths at 50-70cm and 110-130cm. The catch weight varied by sea area, with more skipjack tuna caught east of 162°E and more yellowfin tuna caught west of 162°E.
