Maize plants recycle phosphorus to thrive in low-nutrient conditions
Phosphorus in maize roots can be moved from old cells to new ones when the plant lacks phosphorus. The study used a tracing technique with a phosphorus isotope and found that phosphorus is mostly moved from root cells to the shoot, not the root tip, when the plant forms air spaces in the roots due to phosphorus deficiency.
