The researchers used satellite images and field surveys to study desertification in Otog Banner, Inner Mongolia. They found four types of desertification lands, with wind erosion increasing from north to south. The area of desertification lands decreased, but the severity of erosion increased. Most desertification lands were slight or moderate. Former salinized lands turned into desertification lands. Transformation often occurred between slight desertification and non-desert lands.
