The article argues that rigour and relevance in research are actually closely connected, like two organisms in a beneficial relationship. It reviews past research on the topic and suggests ways for PhD students to handle the tension between rigour and relevance in their own projects. The study's unique perspective comes from looking at the relationship between rigour and relevance through a biological lens, comparing it to symbiosis in nature.
