Aquatic plants show promise in purifying wastewater, improving water quality.
Three aquatic plants were tested in simulated wastewater to see how well they could remove nitrogen and phosphorus. Juncus effusust L. was best at removing nitrogen, while Alternanthera Philoxeroides(Mart.)Griseb. was best at removing phosphorus. Ceratophyllum demersum L. also did well at removing nitrogen and phosphorus. In water with different levels of nutrients, each plant had different strengths in cleaning up the water. Overall, these plants are good at purifying mildly to moderately polluted water, especially when there is a moderate amount of nutrients present.
