Revolutionary Chemical Treatments Boost Nutritional Value of Crop Straw!
Compound chemical treatments were used to improve the nutritional value of crop straw. Wheat, oat, and rye straw treated with urea and calcium hydroxide showed reduced fiber content and increased protein content. The treated straw also had higher digestibility, comparable to sheep fescues and corn straw silage. These treatments improved rumen degradability and degrading rate of the crop straw.
