The study in the Aibinur lake region of Xinjiang looked at different types of desertification. They found that most desertification in the area is caused by a single factor, but composite desertification is also important. Between 2002 and 2005, the area of Aibinur lake decreased, total desertification increased, and composite desertification more than doubled. Wind-erosion and composite desertification areas grew, while saltification desertification decreased. Overall, desertification expanded in the region, with composite desertification becoming more diverse and spreading to different types of land.
