Constructed wetlands boost rural sewage treatment, improving water quality significantly.
A study in China compared how well shallow (40cm) and deep (60cm) constructed wetlands cleaned rural sewage. The deeper wetland removed more COD and phosphorus, while the shallower one removed more nitrogen. Both wetlands mainly removed nitrogen through nitrification/denitrification and phosphorus through absorption and sedimentation. Plant harvesting also helped remove some nitrogen and phosphorus from the water.
