Alpine meadow cultivation leads to significant loss of plant biomass.
The researchers studied how different land uses affect plant biomass and carbon in alpine meadows. They looked at natural meadows, croplands, and artificial grasslands in the Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that artificial grasslands had the highest aboveground biomass, while natural meadows had the highest belowground biomass. The amount of fixed carbon in vegetation was highest in natural meadows compared to croplands and artificial grasslands.
