New compound materials create high haze and transmittance for brighter future.
The scientists studied how adding a small amount of polystyrene (PS) to Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) can change the way light scatters in materials. By adjusting the amounts of PS and a special additive called PMMAPS, they found that they could control the haze and transparency of the materials. With just 1% PS, the materials had 80% transparency. By using PMMAPS, they were able to increase the haze from 50% to 80%. This means that by carefully adjusting the amounts of PS and PMMAPS, they can create materials that are both very hazy and very transparent.
