Alarming Soil and Water Pollution Threatens Jiangning Region's Ecosystem
Researchers studied soil and water pollution in Nanjing from 2001 to 2010 using a method called USLE. They found that the pollution levels for total nitrogen and total phosphorus were moderate, while ammonia and nitrogen pollution levels were light. Available phosphorus pollution was minimal. The overall area and amount of pollution exceeding safe levels were significantly reduced during the decade. The proportion of heavily polluted areas decreased, with lightly polluted areas making up the majority. Intense pollution, especially in total nitrogen, remained a major concern, representing 37.4% of the pollution amount. The study indicates improvements in managing non-point source pollution in the region over the years.
