Flue-cured tobacco seedlings were grown with different levels of nitrogen to see how it affected their growth. More nitrogen led to more plant matter, but too much nitrogen hurt root growth. Not enough nitrogen made the leaves lose color, while the right amount made them greener. Nitrogen levels also affected how active the roots were and how much the plant's cell membranes were damaged.
