Invasive plant species in wetlands set to dominate, impacting ecosystem balance.
The study looked at two types of plants, Phragmites australis and Spartina alterniflora, in the wetlands of Minjiang River Estuary. They found that Spartina alterniflora had more aboveground biomass than Phragmites australis, especially in autumn. Both plants had the most biomass in certain seasons, with Phragmites australis having the highest in summer and Spartina alterniflora in winter. The belowground biomass decreased with depth for both plants. Overall, Spartina alterniflora's total biomass was higher than Phragmites australis, and it was predicted to keep increasing in the future.
