Western Kunlun terraces reveal ancient tectonic secrets shaping modern landscapes.
The formation of river terraces in western Kunlun, China was studied using dating tests. The terraces formed around 1.2 million years ago, with specific levels forming at 39,000, 18,000, and 5,000 years ago. The terraces reflect river incision due to tectonic activity and uplift of the mountains. The study shows that tectonic activity plays a significant role in controlling river patterns and behavior in the region.
