High-yield wheat varieties show superior nutrient efficiency in dryland farming.
The study looked at how different types of winter wheat respond to nutrients in dryland conditions. They found that high-yield wheat varieties take up more nitrogen and phosphorus from the soil compared to low-yield varieties, especially when more fertilizer is used. Despite this, the efficiency of using these nutrients did not change with more fertilizer. High-yield wheat varieties were much better at recovering and using nitrogen and phosphorus efficiently compared to low-yield varieties, even with less fertilizer.
