High-density planting and optimal nitrogen boost maize yields to record levels.
The study looked at how planting density and nitrogen fertilizer affect the growth and yield of summer-sown maize. They found that increasing planting density led to more dry matter and ears per hectare, but decreased harvest index and grain quality. The best results were seen with a density of 6.75-7.5 plants per square meter. Increasing nitrogen fertilizer up to 375 kg/ha also increased dry matter, harvest index, and yield components, but going beyond that decreased yield. The highest maize yields were achieved with a planting density of 6.75-7.5 plants per square meter and 375 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizer.
