Land use intensification in Karst mountains leads to decreased seed diversity.
The researchers studied soil seed banks in Karst mountains to see how different land uses affect them. They looked at species, amount, distribution, dominance, and diversity in 10 land types. They found that most seeds in soil banks are herb species, and this matches the above-ground vegetation in most land types. The number of seeds and tree species decreases with more intense land use, but biodiversity and dominance increase. Seed distribution varies with depth in soil samples, except in cropped land where it's different. Herb seeds are evenly spread, while tree seeds are patchy.
