Serum ionized calcium levels crucial for patients with hypoalbuminemia.
The researchers measured serum ionized calcium levels in 130 healthy people to establish normal values. They also compared ionized calcium levels in 64 patients with low albumin levels. The normal range for ionized calcium was found to be 0.97±0.08 mmol/L, while in patients with low albumin, total calcium was significantly lower than in healthy individuals. However, ionized calcium levels did not show significant changes in these patients. The difference between total and ionized calcium levels was significant. This suggests that measuring ionized calcium is more important than total calcium for understanding the body's physiological functions.
