High irrigation water levels hinder winter wheat, promote maize N uptake.
The study looked at how different amounts of water and nitrogen fertilizer affect the uptake of nutrients by winter wheat and maize. High levels of water and nitrogen were not good for winter wheat's nitrogen uptake, but maize could handle more nitrogen. Maize took in more nitrogen when more fertilizer was used, while wheat took in a lot of nitrogen even with less water. Both crops absorbed more phosphorus and potassium with more water, especially maize. Most of the potassium was found in the straw, so it's important to return straw to the field after harvest.
