Fungi Found to Remove Toxic Cadmium, Potentially Saving Lives
A type of fungi called Phoma sp. F2 was found to be very good at resisting and removing cadmium, a harmful heavy metal. The fungi could survive in high levels of cadmium and effectively remove it from the environment, especially at high initial concentrations. The dried biomass of the fungi could absorb up to 28% of the cadmium present. The process of cadmium removal followed a specific pattern, and the fungi worked best when lyophilized. They were able to remove cadmium effectively across different pH levels and concentrations.
