New Legume Varieties Show High Drought Resistance for Sustainable Agriculture
A study looked at how well different legume plants can grow in dry conditions. They tested five types of legumes with varying amounts of a substance called polyethylene glycol to mimic drought. They found that the legumes with the best resistance to drought during seed germination also had the best resistance during later growth stages. The order of drought resistance from best to worst was Eureka, Defi, Lotus corniculatus, Huia, and Revendel. The researchers suggest that measuring seed germination rate and certain plant characteristics can help identify which legumes are best suited for dry conditions.
