A new method called the comprehensive water quality index was developed to evaluate water quality in Shanghai. This method helps to assess water quality and identify pollution sources in surface water. By looking at parameters like dissolved oxygen, permanganate index, BOD5, ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus, the method can show how nitrogen and phosphorus pollution affects urban water quality in Shanghai.
