Ancient Sands Unveil Hidden Oil Reserves in Junggar Basin Hinterland.
The Sangonghe Formation in the Junggar Basin was studied to understand how sand deposits were formed. By analyzing core samples and other data, researchers found that the sand types were influenced by sources from the northeast and northwest. Changes in sea level and sediment sources led to different types of sediment layers in the eastern and western parts of the area. Over time, the sediment changed from river deltas to lake deposits. The most important areas for exploration are the mouth bar sands at the delta front and underwater distributary channels.
